There are approximately 200,000 Muslims
living in Japan today. More and more Muslim children are being born and raised
in Japan. It is certain that young generations of Muslims will be the core of
the Muslim community in Japan in the future. The future of the Muslim community
in Japan depends on their growth.
Until today, foreigner Muslims have played a major role in the construction of mosques and various activities, but for sustainable development in the future, Muslims who were born and settled in Japan should play a key role.
The problems facing the next generation of
Muslims, who are likely to be the future leaders of Japan's Muslim society, are
numerous; most of the problems faced by Muslims in their teens and twenties
involve their elementary, middle, and high school years, and their subsequent
higher education and employment. In the past, with many children under the age
of teens, the main focus of attention was on whether school lunches were halal
or not, or whether they had to prepare their own lunches. However, as the
children get older, a much larger issue became more prominent. That is, will
the children be able to establish themselves as Muslims and live as Muslims in
Japan? In many cases, it is clear that children are not doing very well in
accepting their Muslim identity and living by practicing Islam.
“Education”, in the broadest sense of the
word, seems to be the key to establish oneself as a Muslim in Japanese society.
In Japan, there are limited places to study Islam or modern Islamic schools,
which are found in Muslim countries. In many parts of Japan, activities for
children to learn Islam are conducted at mosques and other locations. However,
to nurture children, more important than anything else is "education"
at home.
